Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen veins, usually on the legs which sometimes appear slightly blue and lumpy. They can be almost anywhere on the body, but commonly, the legs are most often affected.

For some people, varicose veins can be purely a cosmetic concern but for others, this condition can cause swelling and discomfort. Varicose veins usually do not present a medical threat.

Common causes of varicose veins are:
Hormonal changes (especially during pregnancy and menopause).
Being overweight (increases the pressure on veins).
Prolonged sitting or standing (restricts circulation and puts added pressure on veins).
Chronic constipation
Genetics and/or Aging

Obviously there are certain lifestyle changes which would be very important. Do you smoke or drink? Have you eliminated 'suspect,' foods: dairy, coffee, sugar, salt, fried foods, processed and refined foods, etc? It is important to keep your collagen strong so cutting out sugar is a must! Research glycemic index (glycemicindex.com). Do not let yourself get hungry between meals. Eating (for instance) some raw nuts between meals to maintain blood sugar levels is helpful. The protein & healthy fat will help cut down on sugar cravings.

All of the breathing in Kundalini Yoga is great for strengthening the capillaries. Kundalini Yoga is also one of the very best things you can do for hormonal balance. Some recommendations are the Breath Series on our Meditation for Beginners DVD, our Fat Free Yoga DVD for glandular balance, also our Warrior Workout and Kundalini Yoga Flow Bootcamp for circulation.

The supplements MSM and silica would also be beneficial. as will anything which promotes healthy circulation. People have had success with the herb Butchers Broom or its active ingredient, silymarin.

One more thing: Have you tried a liver cleanse? We recommend our Yoga Cleanse DVD. We are sure that by addressing all of these areas: hormonal, improving circulation, and detoxing, you will have good success.
